Scrolls for Courses, first public beta

Scrolls records a course or bootcamp session and gives you the transcript, study notes, and lists of tasks and things to practise. A program records once and shares the notes with its whole cohort.

For programs

  • Create a cohort with an end date, and share a join code with participants.
  • Share a recorded session into the cohort. Participants read it, never change it, and tick off their own Tasks and Practice.
  • Export a session’s notes, Tasks and Practice as a PDF or Markdown file for anyone who doesn’t use the app.
  • When a cohort’s end date passes, participants lose access to its sessions.

What it does

  • Record a session through your Mac’s microphone. No bot joins anything.
  • A live transcript that separates speakers and sorts the conversation into topics as it goes.
  • Study notes written when the session ends: what it covered, key concepts, definitions, examples and review questions.
  • Hard terms explained as they come up, when you turn on the hard-word popup, and defined in each session’s study notes.
  • Tasks and Practice lists. A task gets the deadline the speaker gave, or Scrolls asks you for one. Tick them off and edit any that came out wrong.
  • Ask questions about a session, and search for a phrase across every session.
  • Upload a recording you already have (m4a, mp3, wav, aac, ogg, opus, flac, webm) and get the same notes and lists.
  • The audio is saved as a file on your Mac only.

Reporting problems

  • Report a problem from the account menu or Settings, with optional diagnostics you can read before sending.
  • If Scrolls closes unexpectedly, it tells you on the next launch and offers to send a report.
  • Anonymous usage analytics are off until you opt in, and never include session content.

Known limits

  • Mac only. Apple silicon and Intel.
  • Online courses work only if your Mac’s microphone can hear them (laptop speakers, not headphones).
  • Scrolls isn’t signed with an Apple developer certificate yet, so macOS blocks it the first time. See Opening Scrolls for the first time.
  • macOS may ask for microphone permission again after you install a newer version.
  • Scrolls does not install updates by itself. Download newer versions from this site.
