Scrolls Help Center

Everything you need to get started, make the most of your sessions and find your way around Scrolls.

On this page

Welcome to Scrolls. This guide explains how to use the app, from recording your first session to revisiting notes, completing Tasks and joining a learning cohort.

Whether you’re attending a program or organizing one, you’ll find instructions for the features available to you.

1. Getting started

What is Scrolls?

Scrolls brings your learning sessions and the material that comes from them together.

Record a class or in-person session using your Mac’s microphone. Scrolls creates a transcript, identifies speakers and organises the conversation into topics. When the session ends, you can revisit notes, key concepts, definitions, examples, Tasks and Practice.

You can also ask questions about your sessions and find material shared by your program.

  1. Open Scrolls.
  2. Select Continue with Google.
  3. A secure sign-in page opens in your browser.
  4. Sign in with your Google account.
  5. Return to Scrolls.

Your sessions and notes can sync with your account, so you can access the material associated with your account on supported devices.

Set up your preferences

When you first open Scrolls, you can choose:

Your name
The name Scrolls uses to address you.
Session language
Choose the language used in your sessions:
  • English
  • Hindi
  • English + Hindi (mixed)
Notes style
Choose how you want your notes to read:
  • Bullet Summary: concise points and key information.
  • Detailed Minutes: a fuller account of the session.
  • Executive Brief: a shorter, structured overview.

You can change these preferences later in Customization.

Take the tour

Scrolls offers a short introduction to its main features. You can skip it and explore on your own.

To replay the interactive tour, select the ? help icon at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Take the tour.

2. Understanding the app

The sidebar is your main way to navigate Scrolls.

Your account menu provides access to your profile, Settings and Help.

Search

Use the search icon in the sidebar to find sessions, folders and tags.

You can:

  • Search by name or keyword.
  • Open recent searches.
  • Browse available categories.
  • Clear your recent search history.

On macOS, use ⌘ K to open Search.

Pinned

Pinned items give you quick access to sessions and folders you use frequently.

Drag a session or folder into the Pinned area of the sidebar. Select a pinned item to open it.

You can collapse the Pinned section when you don’t need it.

3. Recording a session

Scrolls uses your Mac’s microphone to capture a session and create a transcript.

Recording currently takes place through the Mac microphone. For an in-person session, place your Mac where it can hear the speakers clearly. For an online class, the Mac microphone must be able to hear the audio coming from your speakers.

Before you start

Make sure:

  • Your Mac’s microphone is working.
  • Scrolls has microphone permission.
  • Your Mac is positioned to capture the speakers clearly.
  • Everyone has been informed that the session is being recorded.
  • You have obtained any permissions required by your institution and applicable recording laws.

Start recording

  1. Open Home.
  2. Select Start session.
  3. If prompted, allow microphone access.
  4. Choose the microphone you want to use.
  5. Check that your recording settings are correct.
  6. Select Start.

Scrolls begins capturing audio and generating a live transcript.

During a recording

The recording screen gives you access to the live session and its tools.

Pause and resume
Pause recording when you need a break. Resume when you’re ready to continue. While paused, Scrolls does not capture audio.
Microphone
Choose the input device Scrolls should use.
Mark moment
Mark an important point in the session so you can find it again during playback.
Add a note
Write a quick note and attach it to the session timeline.
Add an attachment
Attach a supported file to a session while recording.
Waveform
The waveform gives you a visual reference for the audio being captured. You can show or hide it.

The recording sidebar

The recording sidebar contains several useful sections.

Marks

Use Marks to keep track of important moments, personal notes and attachments.

You can add:

  • A marked moment.
  • A written note.
  • A file attachment.

These help you return to important parts of a session later.

Walkthrough

Walkthrough organises the conversation into topics as the session progresses.

It gives you a quick view of what the conversation is covering without having to read the entire transcript.

Participants

Scrolls identifies speakers in the transcript and displays them in Participants.

You can assign or edit speaker names where needed.

Tasks

Tasks and Practice generated from the session become available after processing is complete.

Ask

Ask questions about the session using the transcript available so far.

For example:

  • What did the speaker mean by this?
  • What was the main point?
  • What did I miss?

Settings

Review the settings available for the current session.

Stop recording

  1. Select Stop.
  2. Scrolls begins processing the session.
  3. Wait for the transcript and notes to finish.
  4. Select Open session to review the result.

Processing may take a little time depending on the length of the recording and the settings used.

4. Uploading an existing recording

You can import an audio recording instead of recording a session live.

Import a file

  1. Open Home.
  2. Select Upload a recording.
  3. Choose an audio file.
  4. Confirm the import.
  5. Wait while Scrolls processes the audio and creates the session.

Supported formats include:

  • WAV
  • MP3
  • M4A

The time needed to process a recording depends on its length and your Mac’s available resources.

You can continue using Scrolls while processing runs.

Import warnings

File already imported
Scrolls may recognise a file you’ve imported before. You can cancel or choose to import it again.
Recording may be incomplete
If a file appears to have been cut short, Scrolls may ask whether you want to import the available audio.
Recording too long
Some recordings may exceed what your Mac can process in one import. Split the recording into shorter files and import them separately.
No audio detected
Make sure the selected file contains an audio track and can be played.

5. Sessions

The Sessions page is where you find recorded and shared learning sessions.

Recorded sessions

These are sessions you’ve recorded or otherwise have access to as the owner.

Open a session to revisit its transcript, notes, topics and other learning material.

Shared with you

Your program or instructor may share sessions with you through a cohort or course.

These sessions appear in your shared sessions list.

You can open them and use the material made available to you.

Some actions, such as changing the recording or its sharing settings, remain available only to the person who recorded it or the relevant cohort administrator.

Upcoming and timetable

The timetable displays sessions scheduled by your program.

Depending on your access, you may see:

  • Session title
  • Date and time
  • Room or meeting link
  • Instructor
  • Course or cohort

If nothing is scheduled, ask your program administrator whether a timetable has been created.

Open a session

Select a session to view its contents.

The session detail page contains the transcript, participants, topics, notes, Tasks, Practice and other available details.

6. Understanding a session

A session is more than its recording. It brings together the transcript and the material created from the conversation.

Transcript

The transcript contains the words captured during the session.

You can:

  • Read the conversation.
  • See speaker labels.
  • Search for words or phrases.
  • Copy the transcript.
  • View the original-language transcript.
  • Switch to an English translation where available.

Some translated lines may remain in their original language if a translation could not be generated.

Participants

The Participants section shows the speakers identified in the session.

Where available, you can assign names to unidentified speakers or correct speaker labels.

Speaker identification may not always be perfect. Review names and labels when accuracy matters.

Walkthrough and topics

Walkthrough organises the session into topics.

Use it to:

  • See the main subjects discussed.
  • Find where a topic appears in the conversation.
  • Navigate the session more easily.

Topics are generated automatically and may not capture every detail.

Notes

Scrolls generates structured notes from the session.

Depending on the session, these may include:

What the session covered
A summary of the main discussion.
Key concepts
Important ideas and information.
Definitions
Explanations of relevant terms.
Examples
Examples discussed during the session.
Review questions
Questions that can help you revisit what you learned.

Notes are intended to make revision easier, not to replace the original session or transcript.

Playback

When audio is available, use the playback controls to listen again.

You can:

  • Play and pause.
  • Jump back 10 seconds.
  • Jump forward 10 seconds.
  • Adjust playback speed.
  • Navigate using the audio timeline.

The availability of audio depends on where it is stored and whether it has been made available to your account or shared with you.

7. Tasks and Practice

Scrolls turns relevant parts of a session into items you can work through afterwards.

Open Tasks from the sidebar.

Tasks

Tasks are things to do based on the session.

Examples:

  • Read a chapter.
  • Complete an assignment.
  • Prepare a presentation.
  • Revise a concept.

Select Mark done when you finish an item.

Practice

Practice items help you apply or revisit what you’ve learned.

They may include exercises or activities suggested from a session.

Work through each item and mark it as done when complete.

Review questions

Review questions help you check your understanding of session material.

Use them to revisit important ideas and identify what you need to study further.

My tasks

You can also create personal tasks that aren’t generated from a session.

  1. Open Tasks.
  2. Select Add a task.
  3. Enter the task.
  4. Save it.
  5. Mark it as done when completed.

Personal tasks are separate from the Tasks and Practice generated for a shared session.

Track your progress

Use the filters to view:

  • All items.
  • Tasks.
  • Practice.
  • Review questions.
  • Personal tasks.
  • Completed items.
  • Items still to do.

Your progress is personal. A cohort administrator may also have access to completion counts for course Tasks and Practice, depending on the permissions and progress features enabled.

8. Chat

Chat lets you ask questions about the sessions available to you.

Instead of searching through multiple transcripts, ask a question in everyday language.

Start a conversation

  1. Open Chat from the sidebar.
  2. Start a new chat.
  3. Type your question.
  4. Press Enter or select Send.

Examples:

  • Explain the key concepts from my last session.
  • What did the speaker say about the project timeline?
  • Which tasks are still open?
  • Summarise the discussion about pricing.
  • Explain this topic in simpler terms.

Choose session context

Chat can use the sessions available to you as context.

Where the session selector is available, you can:

  • Search for sessions.
  • Select individual sessions.
  • Select all available sessions.
  • Narrow a conversation to particular sessions.

The selected session context helps determine which material is used to answer your question.

Manage conversations

From your chat history, you can:

  • Start a new chat.
  • Rename a conversation.
  • Pin or unpin a conversation.
  • Delete a conversation.

Important. AI-generated answers can contain mistakes or miss context. Check important details against the original transcript or session material, especially when accuracy matters.

Chat conversation sharing is not currently documented as an available feature.

9. Saved

Saved is your personal space for organising sessions and finding them later.

Find saved sessions

Use the tabs and filters to browse your saved material.

You can:

  • View all saved items.
  • Browse folders.
  • Browse sessions.
  • Open the Archive.
  • Search for a session.
  • Sort by date or duration.
  • Filter by date.

Create a folder

  1. Open Saved.
  2. Select New folder.
  3. Enter a folder name.
  4. Choose a colour or icon if available.
  5. Create the folder.

Move a session into a folder

Move a session using the folder controls or drag and drop.

Each session belongs to one folder at a time. Moving it to another folder changes its location.

Use tags

Tags help describe what a session is about.

For example:

  • Research
  • Economics
  • Product design
  • Exam revision

Create a tag and apply it to relevant sessions. You can use tags to filter and find related material.

Deleting a tag removes the label from sessions, not the sessions themselves.

Pin folders

Pin frequently used folders so they appear in the sidebar.

Archive a session

Archive sessions you no longer need in your main Saved view.

Archived sessions remain in the Archive until you restore or permanently delete them.

Restore or delete

Open Archive to:

  • Restore a session.
  • Permanently delete a session.

Permanent deletion cannot be undone. Check the confirmation carefully before proceeding.

10. Cohorts and courses

Cohorts connect participants with the sessions and learning materials shared by their program.

A cohort can contain courses, members, scheduled sessions and shared recordings.

The features visible to you depend on whether you’re a participant, instructor or administrator.

Join a cohort as a participant

Your program administrator will provide an 8-character cohort code.

  1. Open Cohorts.
  2. Select Join a cohort.
  3. Enter the code.
  4. Select Join.

After joining, the cohort and its courses become available to you.

Sessions shared with your cohort or your enrolled course appear in Sessions.

If your code doesn’t work, check that:

  • It has been entered correctly.
  • The cohort is still active.
  • Joining by code is enabled.

If joining by code is disabled, ask your program administrator to add you.

Understand courses

A course is a smaller group within a cohort.

For example, a program might have one cohort with separate courses for:

  • Data Science
  • Product Management
  • Business Strategy

Your access to shared sessions depends on the cohort or course with which they are shared.

Cohort management for administrators

Administrators can manage the cohort from the Cohorts page.

Courses

Create and manage courses within a cohort.

A course lets you share sessions with a specific group rather than the entire cohort.

Members

Add people using their Google account email addresses.

You can manage membership and assign available roles, such as:

  • Admin
  • Instructor
  • Member

Use the email address associated with the Google account the person will use to sign in.

Adding someone does not necessarily send them an email invitation. Let them know how to access the cohort.

Join code

A cohort can have a join code that participants use to join.

Administrators can:

  • Copy the code.
  • Enable or disable joining by code.
  • Generate a new code.

Generating a new code invalidates the old one. People who have already joined remain members.

Timetable

Administrators can add scheduled sessions to a cohort timetable.

A scheduled session can include:

  • Title
  • Date
  • Start and end time
  • Room or link
  • Notes
  • Intended audience (the whole cohort or a course)

Members can see the sessions scheduled for them.

Progress

Where available, the progress section shows completion counts for Tasks and Practice shared through a course.

It is designed to show progress, not personal notes or the written work of participants.

Cohort settings

Administrators can update cohort details, dates, appearance and archive status.

Archiving a cohort hides it and its shared sessions from members. It does not permanently delete the cohort.

11. Customization

Customization lets you adjust how Scrolls captures and processes sessions.

Transcription

Review the available language and transcription preferences.

Depending on the options enabled in your version, these may include:

  • Language detection.
  • English and Hindi support.
  • Native-script or Roman-script output.
  • English translation.
  • Speaker identification.
  • Transcript formatting.
  • Key terms and vocabulary.

Choose settings that match the language and style of your sessions.

Some transcription settings affect only future recordings.

Microphone

Choose the input device Scrolls should use when recording.

You can also change the microphone from the live recording screen.

The selected input device preference is stored on your Mac.

AI & Notes

Choose the style and depth of your generated notes.

Notes style
  • Bullet Summary
  • Detailed Minutes
  • Executive Brief
Analysis depth
  • Light
  • Standard
  • Deep

More detailed analysis may take longer to process.

Changes generally apply to your next recording rather than rewriting existing sessions automatically.

Keyboard shortcuts

Scrolls includes shortcuts for common navigation and playback actions.

Examples include:

  • Space: Play or pause.
  • Playback controls: Skip back or forward 10 seconds.
  • Navigation: Go back or forward.
  • Search: Open Search.

Review the shortcuts displayed in Customization for the current version of the app.

12. Settings

Open Settings from your account menu.

Appearance

Choose how Scrolls looks:

  • System
  • Light
  • Dark

You may also be able to change accent colour and other appearance preferences.

Some window appearance changes require restarting Scrolls.

Notifications

Manage desktop notifications available in your version of Scrolls.

For example, you can enable an alert when notes are ready.

Data & Privacy

Review the data controls available to your account.

Depending on your version, these include:

  • Transcript retention.
  • Exporting your data.
  • Deleting local session data.
  • Deleting account data.
  • Usage-data preferences.
  • Crash-report preferences.

Read each confirmation carefully before deleting data.

Deleting local data and deleting account data are different actions. Permanent deletion may not be reversible.

13. Troubleshooting

Scrolls cannot access my microphone

  1. Open macOS System Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Open Microphone.
  4. Enable access for Scrolls.
  5. Return to Scrolls and try again.

If access still doesn’t work, restart Scrolls and check the selected input device.

The transcript is missing or incomplete

Possible reasons include:

  • The microphone did not capture the speakers clearly.
  • The wrong input device was selected.
  • The recording was too quiet.
  • Some speech was difficult to recognise.
  • The session is still processing.

Check the audio and transcript before relying on the generated notes.

The wrong speaker is identified

Speaker identification can make mistakes.

Open Participants and correct the speaker labels where editing is available.

My notes are empty

Check whether:

  • The session has finished processing.
  • A transcript was generated.
  • The recording contains audible speech.

If the session has audio available, use the session’s note-generation or reprocessing controls where available.

Reprocessing can take several minutes. Re-transcribing may also require you to assign speaker labels again.

My session is not appearing

Check:

  • Whether you’re signed in to the correct account.
  • Whether the session has finished saving.
  • Whether it is in Saved, Archive or Shared with you.
  • Whether the session was shared with your cohort or course.

If syncing is paused, use the retry option.

I cannot join my cohort

Check that:

  • The code contains all 8 characters.
  • The cohort has not ended.
  • Joining by code is enabled.
  • Your account is eligible to join.

If the issue continues, ask the cohort administrator to add you.

Chat is not answering

Try:

  1. Check your internet connection.
  2. Make sure the relevant sessions are available.
  3. Check the selected session context.
  4. Send the question again.

AI answers can vary depending on the transcript and the context selected.

I cannot import a recording

Make sure:

  • The file is WAV, MP3 or M4A.
  • The file contains audio.
  • The file is accessible from your Mac.
  • Another import is not already running.
  • Your Mac has enough available storage.

If the recording is too long, split it into shorter files.

14. Privacy and recording

Recording a session involves other people. Always follow your institution’s rules and the laws that apply to the location where the session takes place.

Before recording:

  • Tell participants that recording is taking place.
  • Obtain any consent or permission required.
  • Follow your institution’s recording policy.
  • Be clear about who can access the transcript, notes and audio.

Where your data is stored

The storage and sharing behaviour depends on the type of material and the features enabled.

  • Audio recordings are stored on the recording Mac by default.
  • Transcripts and notes can sync with your Scrolls account.
  • Audio may be separately uploaded when the relevant sharing feature is used.
  • Shared sessions are visible to the people covered by the sharing settings.

Check Settings › Data & Privacy for available retention and deletion controls.

Important. The exact retention, sharing and processing rules are governed by the applicable Scrolls privacy policy and your institution’s arrangements. This guide does not replace those policies.

15. Frequently asked questions

Does Scrolls record video?

No. The recording workflow described in this guide captures audio through your Mac’s microphone.

Can I record an online class?

You can capture an online class if your Mac’s microphone can hear the audio being played. If you use headphones and the microphone cannot hear the other speakers, their audio may not be captured.

Does Scrolls work in Hindi?

Scrolls supports English, Hindi and mixed English-Hindi sessions. The available transcript and translation options depend on your settings.

Do I need to take notes manually?

You can add your own notes, but Scrolls also generates notes and learning material from the session after processing.

Can I use Scrolls without joining a cohort?

Yes. Cohorts are used by programs to organise members, courses and shared sessions. Your own available sessions do not require every user to belong to a cohort.

Can I access sessions shared by my instructor?

Yes. Sessions shared with your cohort or course appear in Sessions, subject to your access permissions.

Can I edit a session shared with me?

Some actions are restricted to the person who recorded the session or the relevant cohort administrator. You can still use the learning material made available to you.

Can I ask questions about multiple sessions?

Yes. Chat can use the sessions available to you as context. You can narrow the context using the session selector where available.

Can I export my notes?

The session export options include PDF and Markdown where available.

What happens if I delete a session?

Deletion may remove the transcript, notes and locally stored audio. Read the confirmation carefully to understand which data will be deleted. Permanent deletion cannot be undone.

Who can see my Tasks and Practice progress?

You can see your own progress. Cohort administrators may see completion counts for course Tasks and Practice where the progress feature is enabled. This does not mean they can see your personal notes or written work.

Where can I get help?

Use the ? icon at the bottom of the sidebar to take the tour or send feedback.

16. Getting help

If you run into a problem or have a suggestion:

  1. Select the ? icon at the bottom of the sidebar.
  2. Choose Send feedback.
  3. Describe what happened and what you expected.
  4. Include diagnostic information if relevant.
  5. Send your report.

You can also contact your program administrator for questions about cohort access, shared sessions, scheduled classes and recording permissions. For anything else, see Support or email support@getscrolls.app.
